Tasting - Ilurce Tempranillo

Ilurce Tempranillo 2008
Rioja, Spain
Regular Price: $14
Sale Price: $5.95

The Vintage Cellar Tasting Notes: Dark purple. Zesty, youthfully medicinal aromas of dark berries, licorice and cracked pepper. Juicy and fresh, with smooth texture and sweet cherry and spice flavors framed by dusty tannins. Finishes with a suggestion of slightly roasted fruits and good clinging persistence. Delivers a lot of power and richness for the money.

Despite the 88 point rating, I didn't enjoy this wine very much. This was my first experience with this, and shows how subjective ratings can be. This was also my first Tempranillo varietal wine, but I have had others from this region of Spain which I have thoroughly enjoyed. On the nose, right away I found it to be too acidic, picking up a smell of acetone witch was unappealing. On the palate it was actually less hot and acidic as I had expected, but the flavors just did not sit well with me. Perhaps it was the cinnamon sediment at the bottom that also turned me off, it was also the oldest wine I have ever tried.
